Lisbon from a different angle

Lisbon is situated on the north banks of the River Tagus and his charm exists in its strong links to the past. A city set on seven hills, as the legend tells, with its cobble-stoned pavements and narrow streets full of Art Nouveau cafés promises a lot to discover

But the best way to discover Lisbon is to get lost in its narrow streets and up and down roads! Every narrow street will tell you a different story and every story will reach to your heart easily.
When tired of sight-seeing, shopping in Lisbon will take all your tiredness away.

Finally I recommend visiting the Expo center and “Oceonário”. The Oceanarium is not only Portugal's largest indoor aquarium -- but it's Europe's as well. Exhibits correspond to different oceans, including the Tropical Indian, the Temperate Pacific, Antarctic, North Atlantic, as well as the Global Ocean…

  9. I'm sorry but it has nothing to do with Columbus. Although Columbus had been married to a Portuguese woman and lived in Portugal for seven years, he had never been engaged in the Portuguese discoveries, despite having made a proposal to sail to the east by going west. However, his proposal was rejected by the then Portuguese king. The photo shows the so-called Discoveries Monument that celebrates the Portuguese discoveries.

  10. Yes it does. Actually, it was inspired by the colossal Christ the Redeemer of Rio de Janeiro, but it's much smaller.

  11. Very nice photo report of your stay in Lisbon. All photos are good and depicting very well some corners of Lisbon and its surroundings. You did capture the atmosphere of the city in a way that very few foreign visitors would do in a few days' stay. Thanks, Viera, for sharing on here a bit of your stay.

  12. Wow... that's Santa Justa Lift, one of Lisbon's best-loved landmarks. This structure was built at the turn of the century by the Portugal-born French architect Raoul de Mesnier du Ponsard (an apprentice of Gustave Eiffel, explaining the structure's similarities to Paris' Eiffel Tower), to connect downtown to the highest area of Lisbon. Originally powered by steam, it is 45 meters (147ft) high, and remains an interesting example of post-Eiffel iron architecture.

  18. Jerónimos Monastery is an prime example of Manueline architecture...
In 1496, King Manuel I asked the pope for permission to build a great monastery in thanks to the Virgin Mary for Vasco de Gama's successful voyage to India. The request was granted and construction began on the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos on January 6, 1501.
The 1755 earthquake damaged the monastery but thankfully did not destroy it.

  21. Discoveries Monument, built on the north bank of the Tagus River in 1960 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator.

It represents a three-sailed ship ready to depart, with sculptures of important historical figures such as King Manuel I carrying an armillary sphere, poet Camőes holding verses from The Lusiads, Vasco da Gama, Magellan, Cabral, and several other notable Portuguese explorers...

The only female is queen Felipa of Lancaster, mother of Henry the navigator, the brain of the discoveries...

    OdpovedaťOdstrániť
  51. Because of being a cable-stayed bridge and its similar coloring, due to it is often compared to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, USA. The similarity is really very hight... In fact, it was built by the same company (American Bridge Company) that constructed the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.
